Black hooded oriole
Oriolus xanthornus
22.5417, 88.3164
Field Notes
Description:
Golden yellow bird with a black hood for a head. Pink beak. Black bands on wings.
Habitat:
Hides behind leaves in tall trees.
Notes:
Very wary bird...sees you even before you have time to focus the camera. In Bengali (Bangla) this bird is called Bay-nay Bou. Bay-nay is a seafaring merchant. Bou is generic term for wife/bride. Because of the bird's golden colour it is imagined that it is wearing a ton of gold ornaments as befits the bride of a rich merchant. Also called Bou-kotha kou (Speak, bride) because that is what the call sounds like to our ears in West Bengal and Bangladesh..
