Field Notes

Description:

Family: Erebidae, Subfamily: Arctiinae, Tribe: Arctiini (Tiger Moths). Wingspan: 32-42 mm. Total length: 14-19 mm. FW patten is variable but typically is uniformly white in the northern part of the range and marked with brown spots to the south. Coxa and part of legs yellow/orange. Adults feed on leaves of variety of deciduous trees. Can be a pest. Hosts: deciduous trees including ash, hickory, maple and oak.

Habitat:

Woodlands, fields and gardens. Attracted to light.

Notes:

Fortunate to find southern range spotted Fall Webworm Moth. Usually the ones around here are mostly white with few spots.
