Field Notes

Description:

32" long.
Body Stout, duck like. Summer- his back is black, with large white spots on the head, neck, and bill black; white bands on neck;eyes red. Winter- slaty above, white below; bill slaty. Bill havy and pointed. In flight, legs xtend beyond tail.
Voice- Quavering laughter, yodeling heard mainly on summer nights.

Habitat:

Summer and migration to lakes. Winter, coastal bays and ocean.
Range: April- October
VT, NH, ME
September-April; entire coast.

Notes:

I seem to have an easier time photographing these guys while on the ocean during the winter months. Their colors (or absence of) seems easier to pick up at that time. Lighting needs to be right on for a good summer photo. Unfortunately, the sun was setting and was more of a backlight while I took these pictures.
