Field Notes

Description:

A jaunty looking bird with a definite crest that can be raised or lowered. Red and white cheek patches. Black crown and head with white front. Melodious call...liquid notes.

Habitat:

Pretty happy in urban areas with trees and shrubbery.

Notes:

Very callous parents....one pair nested in my garden. Hatched three chicks, killed one by not feeding it enough and stomping on it. The other two were given flying lessons a bit too early in life and late in the evening with failing light...both chicks crashed and died.
Less common than its cousin the Red vented bulbul P. cafer.
