Field Notes

Description:

The Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus ) is a parrot native to the Solomon Islands, Sumba, New Guinea and nearby islands, northeastern Australia and the Maluku Islands (Moluccas). It is unusual in the parrot family for its extreme sexual dimorphism of the colours of the plumage; the male having a mostly bright emerald green plumage and the female a mostly bright red and purple/blue plumage.

Habitat:

Found in rainforest & woodland much further north than where I saw this bird, making me think it's an escaped pet. It was really quite tame & just sat feeding on the grass seeds.

I figured so too Kerry. I would much prefer to have seen him in the wild.
I was thinking he was in the wrong place. We saw them in the wild right up the top of Cape York. Must be an escaped pet...a very expensive one! They are a beautiful bird Leanne. Love them!
