Field Notes
Description:
The tip of the first pair of legs is white then transitions to black and yellow, the rest of the legs are yellow with bands of black. The back pair of legs are significantly longer than the rest, hence how it got that common name.
Habitat:
I would usually find them resting on the leaves of my plants. They are most diverse in tropical and subtropical habitats, especially in the Neotropical Region.
Notes:
They are quite common, I find them around my garden. They are a diverse family of flies in the insect order Diptera, but most do look vaguely similar to one another so I placed the identification of this spotting on its family level.
