Description:

The crest is raised when the bird is landing and also when surprised. Otherwise it is kept folded back like in the photograph.

Habitat:

Open land where it can move about looking for grubs and insects; also trees.

Notes:

This attractive bird is often mistaken for a woodpecker in West Bengal, India. It is more common in Delhi than in Kolkata.
