Field Notes

Description:

Large male skink. Biggest skink I've ever seen, but the females of this species are bigger (up to 13"!). He was not pleased about being caught and opened a fierce-looking but toothless mouth. After the photo session, I released him unharmed.

Habitat:

Rocky ground in deciduous forest, at the side of the Appalachian Trail.
