Field Notes

Description:

Large fly with an elongated abdomen that tapers. Dark body. Wings patterned with dark brown. Front legs dark except for the front tibiae, which are light in color (see pictures 2 and 3). When the flies are landed and moving they wave their front front legs around quite a bit.

Habitat:

Sears Bellows County Park, New York. Wooded campground with freshwater ponds, oak and pitch pine.

Notes:

They were everywhere in moderate numbers. Fairly slow fliers and not skittish.
