1 cm long flying insect.

Habitat:

In house on window

Notes:

Female (the males have plumose antennae).
Nearby are water garden ponds with red larvae swimming in.

Thanks for pointing me to the right family. Indeed there are garden ponds near here and there were small red larvae in it. Now I make the connection :) From the identification key I found, it appears that is a female Chironomus but I don't have enough details on my photos to find the species.
Lovely series! This looks like a female Midge, Family Chironomidae. They resemble mosquitoes but don't bite. You can usually find them not far from water as their larvae are aquatic. I am unfamiliar with the species in your area so I can't be of much more help than that.
