Andrea has suggested the 'solitary bees' family.
A lot of male solitary bees sleep at night by finding a plant stem and locking their jaws onto it so they don't fall off. Ha ha! Good trick. Maybe these are doing that. Here's a stick of bees near in our area. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/10929083
If they have stingers they would be at the other end. :-)
