Field Notes

Description:

Strelitzia reginae is a flowering plant indigenous to South Africa. Common names include Strelitzia, Crane Flower or Bird of Paradise, though these names are also collectively applied to other species in the genus Strelitzia. It has been widely introduced around the world, including the Americas and Australia, growing well in any area that is sunny and warm.

Habitat:

Australia shares very similar climate conditions to South Africa, so the Strelitzia species do well here. They like full sunshine and well drained soil, are drought-tolerant, but aren't overly fond of frosts. Brisbane's climate is subtropical, so they thrive here.

Notes:

This photo series shows my Bird of Paradise flowering and seeding. The final photo of the series was taken after the Brisbane Flood of 2011. It survived, albeit slightly flattened. It also survived several years of drought in this country, so it's a hardy plant that has earned its place in my backyard.
