Field Notes

Description:

EVIL CLAWS my ankles encountered during a hike in Nevada, Missouri. Fairly common I noticed. These "raspberry-looking" buds blossom into nicely scented pink/ purple puffballs with pink tips. I had a hard time photographing the leaves because they fold up when touched. I WISH THE THORNS DID! Thorns are backward fishhooks...beware :)

Habitat:

Prairie undisturbed area near woods in Missouri. USDA zone 6b
Beautiful, highly scented purplish/ pink puffball flowers when in bloom.

Notes:

I've read a lot of interesting "legally questionable" uses for many of these little mimosa plants, but nothing on this particular type
