Beautiful wood nymph
Eudryas grata
36.9912, -91.4926
Field Notes
Description:
Adult: larger than Pearly Wood Nymph (Eudryas unio), and the dark band along outer margin of forewing is smoothly curved on the inside, not scalloped as in E. unio.
Habitat:
In an overgrown area along a highway
Notes:
While traveling home from a family vacation, we stopped for fuel along the road. We were also hungry so we made sandwiches while we were stopped, and I poked around the plants while we ate. I found this moth and photographed it before we began driving again. It was neat to show my daughter how it resembles bird droppings among the leaves. The funny part about this spotting is how I set off the van's alarm while leaning in for a shot. I accidentally pressed the alarm button on the key while it was in my pocket!
