Field Notes
Description:
A large woody climber, the branchlets ferrugineous-tomentose. Leaflets 3, subcoriaceous, ferrugineous beneath, the terminal one oblong, 12—15 cm long, 6—7 cm broad, cuspidate. Flowers 15—30 in long-peduncled pendulous racemes, up to 40 cm long; pedicels about 2.5 cm long; calyx ferrugineous without, about 1 cm long; corolla dark purple, about 5 cm long. Pods flattened, mostly 7—15 cm long, 5 cm broad, densely pubescent; 2—6-seeded.
Habitat:
Malaysia and Polynesia. Taiwan, in forests at low and medium altitudes (1,300-2,150 m.) throughout the island.
Notes:
It's a really huge vine. I have seen one which diameter is about 15cm. It's flowers are also big and bend with light yellow and dark purple. Other huge thing is it's legumes which can be 30cm long or more. Some research in Okinawa show that bats help it's relative species pollenate, but there is no similar research in Taiwan.
