Description:
This fungus grows in layers, starting as little balls of whitish grey fur (pics 4&5). The fruiting bodies are clam shaped and lobed with a furry upper surface and radiating split gills on the underside (pic #3).
Habitat:
Spotted growing on a decaying damp pine log
Notes:
This is a common fungus with unique split gills. The caps can retract and remain dry for up to 50 years and with some rehydration, unroll to spread spores.
Although eaten in some parts of the world, there are known health issues ( brain and broncho-pulmonary diseases) related to the spores of this fungus.
