Field Notes

Description:

Large, dark, winged ants and smaller orange ants swarming in my front yard.

Habitat:

Maryland, US.

Notes:

Did not seem to be eating anything. Winged ones formed the outside edge of the mass and were faced outwards. As I watched, they expanded the area they covered. Showed up quickly and disappeared quickly. I would love to know what they are and what they were doing.
