Field Notes

Description:

Slightly smaller than a golf ball. Fuzzy, white gall with pink spots. Produced by the larvae of a tiny wasp. Growing on the stem of a White Oak. Image 4 for tree ID purposes.

Habitat:

Sears Bellows County Park, New York. Trail side in an oak and pitch pine woodlands. White Oak tree.

Hi Technopony13, don't give up! I would say at least half of my spottings were seen in my back yard in a suburban neighborhood. Sometimes all it takes is to slow down and observe what is around you. For instance, if you have flowering plants in your yard, there is a good chance that insects will be attracted to them. I also visit local parks near me, like the one where I found this gall. I am sure you will begin to find interesting organisms. You would be amazed at how wonderful even something as common as a fly can become when you take a closer look. :)
Never seen one wish I had though I don't see many cool things.
