Field Notes

Description:

A very wary bird. Lovely rust, black and white colours can be spotted from a distance. Harsh sound but during courtship produces a surprisingly melodious call...the first time I heard the courtship call I thought it was a new species of bird.

Habitat:

Open scrub. I have seen it in trees in gardens and on electrical wires; never low or on the ground.

Notes:

In Bengali/Bangla the Rufous Treepie is called Haari-chacha which means scraper of the pot; a reference to its harsh call.
