Description:
Cortinarius is a genus of mushrooms. It is suspected to be the largest genus of agarics, containing over 2000 different species and found worldwide. The common name of Webcap refer to members of the genus. A common feature among all species in the genus Cortinarius is that young specimens have a cortina (veil) between the cap and the stem, hence the name, meaning curtained. Most of the fibers of the cortina are ephemeral and will leave no trace once gone, except for limited remnants on the stem in some species. All have a rusty brown spore print.
Habitat:
These fungi are protected within the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area, this particular location being Springbrook National Park, a habitat of cool temperate rainforest. It is at high altitude (1550m), dense forest canopy and very moist with high rainfall.
Notes:
I'm fairly certain I've identified at least the correct genus of these mushrooms. They were found on the walking track near the Antarctic Beech in Springbrook National Park. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/26607028
