Peat Moss
Sphagnum sp.
43.789, -74.7495
Field Notes
Description:
Peat moss is the driving force behind an entire type of habitat: the peat bog. In the process of its decomposition, it ultimately creates an environment with acidic water in which few plants can survive. This results in a low-oxygen, low-nutrient habitat. The plants that can live in this environment are adapted to be able to conserve fresh water well and to get their nutrients by non-traditional means.
