Description:
The gypsy moth (also called North American gypsy moth). Tiny, black young caterpillars are windblown to their food plants, where they will feed day and night but older stages of the caterpillars feed only at night. The gypsy moth is classified as a pest, and its larvae consume the leaves of over 300 species of trees, shrubs and plants. The gypsy moth is one of the most destructive pests of hardwood trees in the eastern United States.
Habitat:
There were several of these gypsy moth cocoons at our county park in Millersville, Maryland.
