Field Notes

Description:

Large slender wasp about 2" in length.
Black body and wings. The lower abdomen is bulb shaped and is joined to the thorax with a thin stalk. There is a red band around the lower abdomen. Some of these species can vary in the band to a patch.
Females are known to kill caterpillars and take them to burrows that are packed sand. The caterpillars are used for food for larvae.
The wasp itself feeds on nectar and a pollinator.

This one was found by a sandy beach
