Field Notes

Description:

Long streamline shape. Two abdominal fins fuse and use as a suck to adhesive on rock. Juveniles have colorful fins and some bands on body sides. However, these character disappear when they grow up.
Feeds on adhesive algae.

Habitat:

Inhabits fast-flowing streams.
Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.

Notes:

Sicyopterus japonicus has a amphidromous life histories with spawning in freshwater, and their larvae drifting downstream to the sea where they have an oceanic larval life, before migrating back into the rivers to grow and reproduce. In Taiwan lots of river's downstream have been polluted, so the number of these amphidromous fish decrease.
