Field Notes

Description:

About 10-12 mm in length, colored as shown. Note antennae inserted very low on face; crown of blunt teeth on top of head.

Habitat:

Found 3-4 specimens running around on a huge old cottonwood log in a grove of live cottonwoods. Surrounding habitat is mostly degraded shortgrass prairie, cholla cacti being the tallest vegetation. Some riparian areas scattered across the ranch.

Notes:

Despite being parasitic on woodboring insects, orussids are most closely related to sawflies.
