Horned Lark
Eremophila alpestris
37.6479, -122.152
Field Notes
Description:
Light brown back, white underside with light brown band across the chest. Black partial collar, black mustache and black on head with feathers that stick out on the back side of the head to give the appearance of horns. Yellow color between the black areas. Almost the same size of a sparrow this behaves like a Pipit.
Habitat:
Flat or hillsides of low to medium growth weeds and grasses. Spotted some in a desert. This one was on a flat top of an old landfill.
Notes:
Some of these birds I run into are shy and fly away before you can get close. These in this spot I can get pretty close and sometimes they hold so still I almost step on them cause I can see them when they want to blend in.
