I posted old pictures of a silverleaf hydrangea here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/27151023. The flowers look a little more like H. arborescens or H. cinerea to me, both of which are found in TN.
It looks to be a species of Hydrangea. Hydrangeas often (but not always) have large, sterile flowers surrounding the flower head. The most common species is H. arborescens. The back of the leaves are green. It could also be H. radiata, silverleaf hydrangea. The back of the leaves are a whitish color. I've seen quite a lot of both species in Tennessee.
