Field Notes

Description:

This was a specimen in early development, the Tobacco Hornworm can usually be found in Chilly, Tobacco, Tomato and Tomatillo bushes, this bush used to have plenty of hornworms, but this time I only found this one alive, the other ones were dead hanging on the leaves with empty wasp eggs on their anterior zone, they were turning black and being sucked up, it was pretty horrible, but I'm glad the species still around, hope the wasps don't eradicate them from the bush.

Habitat:

Tropical Grasslands

Notes:

It was on a chilli bush

Manduca quinquemaculatus has v-shaped white markings along its sides, while Manduca sexta has the diagonal white lines. If you are torn between these two species, I say you have Manduca sexta. :-) http://bugguide.net/node/view/3244
