Field Notes

Description:

Leaf has 5 to 9 fingerlike lobes. Leaves turn red or brown in autumn; sometimes remains on tree most of the winter.

Habitat:

Spotted at Tamarac along the roadside on 400th Ave. It is slow growing on heavy, well-drained acid soil.

Notes:

Fruit (acorn) is a valuable fall food source for many wildlife.
