Field Notes

Description:

A woody shrub with heads of tiny white flowers. There are often, but not always, larger, sterile flowers surrounding the flower head. The leaves are opposite and toothed, with a distinctive white underside that give the plant its common name.

Habitat:

Rocky outcrops and streamsides.

Notes:

The insect in the last photo is a yellowjacket hover fly (Milesia virginiensis). More pictures of that bee mimic fly are here: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/17808111.

Thanks, mauna Kunzah. At the time I took these pictures, I was photographing plants almost exclusively. Capturing the hoverfly reminded me how the digital age democratized photography. If I had to pay for film and processing, I'd never even attempt many of the spottings I post.
