Field Notes

Description:

Eye-catching wading bird with beautiful plumage. As it hunted, it moved slowly and carefully. Once it spotted a fish, it lunged for it quickly and snapped it up. This bird has skills!

Habitat:

VA Tech duck pond. Hanging out in the mucky shallows at the edge of the pond.

Notes:

Green Herons sometimes use tools to catch their prey. They will drop a small food item in the water as bait, then catch and eat the fish that come to it.
