Field Notes

Description:

A lady beetle with an STD - Laboulbeniales fungus

Habitat:

Rural deciduous area, Clermont County

Notes:

Fun fact: The Laboulbeniales fungus only affects beetles and other hard-shelled insects. It burrows through the shell and feeds on the hemolymph of its victim. What essentially makes it an STD is that it can only spread from direct beetle-to-beetle contact, and the only time they're in direct contact long enough is...well. The birds and the beetles, you know. :P
