Drepanid Moth
Thyatira mexicana
16.7153, -92.6127
Field Notes
Description:
A spectacularly colored moth in the Family Drepanidae, the hook-tip moths, although this species lacks the hook-like tip to the end of the wings. About 2 cm long. This one has lost most of the usually thick thoracic hair. In spite of it's odd coloring and pattern, it is surprisingly well camouflaged on the ground (last picture).
Habitat:
Came to an ultraviolet light in the garden, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.
