Thanks for the clarification Lisa! I never knew. These are the kinds of things I just haven't learned in school.
Rana is now reserved for old world species and Lithobates is the accepted genus of the major herpetological groups SSAR, ISH, ASIH, HL and CNAH. I am not sure why AmphibiaWeb lists it as they do, but the correct way would be to list it as Lithobates (Rana) clamitans if one were going to do that.
That is true. Rana is name more commonly used in older literature, but it isn't uncommon to still be seen as the scientific name for the species. Amphibiaweb recommends naming frogs that are now treated as Lithobates by adding it after Rana. For example Rana (Lithobates) clamitans should hopefully clarify the species for viewers that are used to one name over the other. http://amphibiaweb.org/
Cecilia is correct but the current scientific name is Lithobates clamitans.
