Field Notes

Description:

This specimen is within group Acutifolia. Plant usually 5 cm long. Capitulum flat-topped, stellate; Fascicles with one pendant and two spreading branches; branch leaf 1mm, barely seccund, hyaline cells with pores in chain-like pattern nearly spanning the distance between fibrils; stem leaf 1mm broad strap-shaped with notched or fabricate apex, pores in distal 1/4 of leaf.

Habitat:

This specimen was collected within a narrow north facing valley in the Cascade mountains at about 2300'. This particular population had accumulated in a large pendant colony on the up-rooted portion of a fallen tree, about 24" long. the site was partially exposed gap in the forest. Not entirely shaded.

Notes:

The sphagnum community in this valley is surprisingly rich in species diversity. S. girgensohnii, ans S. squarrosum are common in this area. This valley indicates relatively high precipitation and humidity.
