Field Notes

Description:

Quad-colored grasshopper nymph. There is a thick, white band in the middle that extends to all six legs. The bottom half of the head and pronotum is black. The rear of the legs and abdomen is red. The top of the head and antennae are a light tan.
The adult is quite variable in appearance. A dark version can be seen at: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/28093141 and a light at:http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/19330590

Habitat:

Coast Sage Scrub on a dirt trail during a wildlife transect survey at Blue Sky Ecological Reserve.

Notes:

Possibly Lactista gibbosus but Bug Guide is still deliberating.
