Field Notes

Description:

Long-legged scarabs of about 1 cm in length mating on the underside of a Goldenrod Leaf. They are covered in short white hairs. The male has several rows of thick spines on the underside of the abdomen which are lacking in the female. The front femora of the male are also different from the female, his are red and thicker, while hers are black. The majority of the leg length is due to the tarsi.

Habitat:

Empty field, semi-urban area, San Cristobal de Las Casas, 2,200 meters.

Notes:

They seemed to be eating the leaves as well as damage on the leaves due to their tarsal claws.
