Field Notes

Description:

Cap. Ca 4.75in x 3.5in (12cm x 8.75cm); uniformly gray with a slight bluish tint; smooth.
Gills. White, graying with age; attached.
Stipe. Thick, ca 1.5in x 1in (3.8cm x 2.5cm) tapering slightly from apex to base. Bruising black.
Odor. No distinctive odor.
Taste. No distinctive taste.
Spore print. White

Habitat:

Growing in soil in leaf litter near lake shore. No associated basal mycelium visible. No trees in immediate vicinity indicating mycorrhizal associations, but nearby woods predominantly hardwood.

Notes:

This mushroom is very similar in appearance to Hygrophorus caeruleus; however, this species has been reported only from the West Coast of the U.S.
