Field Notes

Description:

Cicada Nymph shedding its skin in the morning in May

Habitat:

Lives in the ground for 17 years before emerging, shedding its skin, mating, and dying.

Notes:

This is the only Brood II cicada nymph I saw this year. Strangely enough, I have seen only one adult Brood II adult cicada. By the look of the shed skins, the birds are eating the nymphs soon after they emerge from the ground.
