Field Notes

Description:

Cuteness! Spring peeper and American toad metamorphs began emerging a couple of weeks ago. Here's a couple of spring peepers. In the first picture, you can see the dark X on the frog's back which gives them the specific epithet of their latin name ("crucifer"). In the second, you can see a little bit of the tail is still visible as it finishes absorbing it during the final stages of metamorphosis. These guys are small as adults and pretty tiny at this stage - the second one is on my pant leg. Also very jumpy and hard to get a clear picture of with a camera phone!
