My guess, given size, range, and coloration/patterning, would be juvenile Black-chinned Hummingbird. Not my photo, but take a look: http://natureniche.zenfolio.com/img/s1/v46/p974811204-3.jpg
Wow guys, thanks for the information! I hope we can get this figured out!
I should have clarified. I meant to say in Phoenix area. There are more too but those are rare or accidental.
There are 10 regular species of hummingbird in Arizona, but 18 species total that can be found there. And it makes it 10x more difficult being a female, but Liam should be able to help when he is on.
My area only has about 6 and not all are nesting in this area.
Wow I just read your state has about 8 or 9 nesting species of hummingbirds and not counting non nesting. http://www.phxgardening.com/hummingbird.html
Liam might know. But it looks like a female or immature. Males are usually the colorful ones.
And apeachg, I don't know, unless there is a difference between males and females, I don't think it is an Anna's. He was not colorful, just many shades of brown.
Thanks! It was just dumb luck hahah, I took my puppy out for his morning pee and the little guy hit the window.
Looks like an Anna's hummingbird from the bill, but the color is so drab - it could be a juvenile. So jealous you got it to perch on your hand!
