Field Notes

Description:

A small, yet lovely moth with orange-tipped antennae and a few orange stripes, Mathildana newmanella, Newman's Mathildana is quite the striking diurnal moth!

Habitat:

Larvae feed from webs made under bark of standing dead trees such as apple.
Rawlins reared larvae on the sporophore of the mushroom Ganoderma tsugae (Hemlock varnish shelf).

Notes:

Lifer! A new favorite! Thank you very much to Marcie O'Connor over at my Moth Maniacs Facebook group for the identification. Named in honor of Mr. George Newman, a founder and one-time president (1861-1862) of the Entomological Society of Philadelphia.
