Field Notes

Description:

Brazilian social bee. Live in colonies, composed of workers, drones and several Queens, although only one is responsible for the postures.

Habitat:

Present in the garden of the Imperial Museum-Petrópolis, Rio de Janeiro.

Notes:

To make its nest, this uses vegetable fibres, attacking the flowers and young leaves, until the bark of the trunk of the plant to remove resin. When the plants are in bloom, the damage is even greater, because the Irapuá (another common name) makes a hole in the floral buds, damaging the fruiting.
