Field Notes

Description:

Two caterpillars of the same species. The first one (pictures 1,2 and 3) was very small, yellow with some vague lateral striping. Two small, dark ridges on the dorsal(back) area of the middle of the body. The second one (pictures 4,5 and 6) was about twice the size of the first one. Darker yellowish-brown or brownish orange. Darker on the head and "tail" area. Orange head. This one also shows the same ridges. Typical body shape for a Geometrid (inchworm-type). This species has a fair amount of color variation within the caterpillars. Feeds on Oak and some other species of trees.

Habitat:

Sears Bellows County Park, New York. Wooded campground containing mainly Oak and Pitch Pine.

Notes:

Knocked out of the trees by a storm. Very fast moving caterpillars so my images suffered a bit. First caterpillar is covered in pine pollen (yellow dusty looking stuff).
