Field Notes

Description:

This dragonfly has wings that are marked with a black tip, a black spot on the leading edge near the nodus and a variable black spot at the base of the wing. The basal spot tends to be larger in southern individuals.

Females are browner, with a row of narrow yellow triangles on the top of the abdomen.

It is small, being about 33 mm (1.3 in).

Habitat:

It lives around ponds, lakes, and ditches. This one was photographed near a farm pond in Edgefield County, SC.
