Black-faced Cormorants nesting
Phalacrocorax fuscescens
-38.0532, 140.631
Field Notes
Description:
Unfortunately I have no close-up of these birds (yet) but this is a good example of their chosen nesting places. This rock is just offshore on a very well weathered part of the southern Australian coast. It would be very safe from all land-based predators like cats, dogs, foxes etc. The birds are unlike other cormorant species found around Australia with their chosen habitat being exclusively coastal and marine. They feed on small fish mostly and can dive to 12 metres to catch them.
Habitat:
South-eastern coast of Australia.
Notes:
A similar species of cormorant is the Pied cormorant which has white on its face including around the eyes and only a black cap.
