Field Notes

Description:

Large crane fly with very long legs. Mottled brown wings, grayish thorax. Females have a distinctive, extended abdomen with a saw-like ovipositor on the end. Males (pictures 5 and 6) are similar looking, though smaller and do not have the extended abdomen.

Habitat:

Sears Bellows County Park, New York. Wooded campground.

Notes:

These large crane flies were fairly prevalent.
