Northern Water Snake

An adult Northern Water Snake. A snake's tongue is used to collect information about it's surrounding environment which allows it to find food and to communicate with other snakes through pheromones. When flicking it's tongue in the air, the snake is actually collecting molecules which are then deposited into the Jacobson's organ (vomeronasal organ) located on the roof of the snakes mouth, which then processes the chemical messages.
