Field Notes

Description:

Small, dark-colored salamander with yellow-orange undersides, protruding eyes

Habitat:

Associated with cold springs and seeps. This one was found by overturning woody debris in relatively slow-moving water in a saturated area.

Notes:

I have seen the southern torrent salamander in northern California in the splash zone of high gradient small streams; unfortunately, that was back in the 1990's when field photography was difficult when you were the one on your knees conducting surveys in the stream while it was raining.
