Pileated Woodpecker
Dryocopus pileatus
42.6307, -74.6523
Field Notes
Description:
Very large woodpecker. Predominantly black with some white striping and a bright red crest. They are known for being shy and elusive. In some places it is known as the "cock of the woods."
Notes:
There are a pair of these nesting on the border of our property. This is the male, I believe. Unseen in the first photo, but he's perched right on the edge of the hole containing their nest and offspring, who have gotten quite big!
